PE, School Sport and Physical Activity at Prospect Vale –

Autumn term 2023

It’s been another busy term at PV. The children have all taken part in many exciting and engaging PE lessons despite some Great British weather causing disruption towards in the 2nd half term! Some lessons were taken in class – Sports quiz’s or classroom yoga as the hall was in use for practising our Christmas productions.

What has been happening at PV?

  • In Nursery we have been working on our fundamental skills and gaining confidence in our gross motor skills. Fundamental skills include balancing, running, changing direction, jumping and hopping which we have started to develop well using the apparatus in the hall.
  • In Reception the children have continued to develop all their fundamental skills and have had the opportunity to spend time in the hall using apparatus. Skill development including balancing, jumping, travelling and changing direction have all progressed on the gymnastics equipment and fine motor skills have been used through handling equipment. The
  • Year 1 have explored and developed basic gymnastic skills including rolling, jumping, balancing and travelling. The children have had the opportunity to select their own actions to build short sequences to work towards developing their confidence to perform. The have explored levels, directions and shapes. We have also looked at other basic skills playing fun games in pairs and small groups fitting in with the Rugby World cup.
  • Year 2 have focused on gymnastics and team building games. They have continued to develop skills in gym such as rolling, jumping and balancing and have created short sequences and movement phrases. In KS1 the children develop an awareness of composing sequences to include safety and being aware of others on apparatus. Year 2 have also worked hard on teamwork skills and problem solving. They showed great maturity leading and communicating whilst using blindfolds!
  • Year 3 have also continued to extend their gymnastic skills, really developing their sequence skills and how to perform a routine with good technique. They have worked on linking skills and transitions smoothly ensuring actions flow. The children are gaining confidence performing for each other. Year 3 have also been involved with the rugby theme, learning some basic tag rugby skills and the principles of attacking and defending in invasion games. They have learned ball handling techniques, passing and receiving.
  • Year 4 learned how to think about strategies and tactics in invasion games to outwit their opponent– tag rugby. Whilst playing fun, simple games this has developed their awareness and understanding of the importance of fair play and honesty and abiding by the rules! They have worked hard on their ball handling skills and attacking and defending roles. Year 4 also attended weekly school swimming lessons.
  • Year 5 focused on gymnastic skills and tag rugby. The Year 5 are increasing their good solid skills in gymnastics continuing to perform with self-composed sequences which flow and show ability to link many skills together. They have explored symmetry in their work, synchronisation, canon and partner work. They took part in fitness sessions and are aware the impact of keeping fit and healthy has on their bodies. Year 5 have shown a good level of skill in their ball handling techniques to dodge and defend. They are developing their understanding of playing competitive sports whilst remembering tag rugby is a non-contact sport. They are understanding the importance of fair play and respect.
  • Year 6, as Year 5, worked with increasing skill in tag rugby, learning strategies to outwit their opposing team. They learned good solid attacking and defending skills, ball handling skills, footwork skills and team building skills. They worked on evaluating their own performances as well as offering constructive criticism for their peers. Year 6 took part in fitness sessions and explored their own health and fitness. They designed their own exercises to work different muscle groups and learned components of fitness including speed, stamina, strength, coordination, balance and agility. Gymnastic lessons started and we worked on individual and partner work on the floor and on apparatus.

Across the school-

The start of the term trialled a fun fit ‘Wednesday workout’ with families taking part alongside their children. This was amazing and hugely popular. More events will be coming soon!

We had another fabulous ‘Santa Dash’ with all children taking part during the day. This year it was great to have so many parents join us at one of our 2 family runs at 9.30am and 2.30pm. Thank you to our amazing parents as the turnout was INCREDIBLE!

On the day, sponsorship money collected for this year’s chosen charity UNICEF amounted to a generous amount to support a great cause. Again, a huge Thank you to our generous families, friends and wider community.

This term we had a number of After School clubs running –

  • Year 1/2/3 Cheerleading and dance
  • Year 4/5/6 Cheerleading
  • KS1 & KS2 football
  • Multi sports for Reception – Year 6

**More exciting competitions, activities and clubs are planned for the next term……
